About the location
Home to the Wulgurukaba of Gurambilbarra and Yunbenun, Bindal, Gugu Badhun and Nywaigi peoples, Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland.
Things to do
Townsville offers a wide range of attractions, from the Great Barrier Reef and its tropical islands to the lush rainforests and World Heritage-listed national parks. The formerly quiet coastal town has become a modern metropolis and is now a destination to explore, enjoy, and get closer to nature.
Get a chance to get to know the natural wonder without getting their feet wet – the town is home to the much-lauded Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium. The world’s largest living coral reef aquarium, this educational centre boasts a 2.5 million litre exhibition and a rehabilitation centre for sea turtles.
The reef also brings the Museum of Underwater Art’s inaugural sculpture “Ocean Siren” to life, which can be seen from The Strand Jetty as it changes colour according to the temperature of the water.
How to get there
Townsville is just an hour’s flight away from Cairns and a 2-hour flight from Brisbane.
